Skillet Sausage and Cabbage Dinner

 

My household loves kielbasa sausage and cabbage dinners.  One day I was thinking about how to jazz it up a bit and remembered that my sister-in law had made something similar once before.  She used ground Italian sausage from what I remember but I wanted to stick with the kielbasa.  This recipe has been a huge hit with my family and I usually make it at least once every three weeks.  I like dinners that I can make in 30 minutes or less, but this one is around 50 minutes total.  You may be able to make it faster though.  Give it a try, I think you’ll really like it!

Start with cutting up your cabbage, sausage, and bacon.

Cook bacon on medium high heat until almost done, then drain most of the grease and return pan to heat.

Add in the sausage and your garlic powder, cook for 5 minutes.

Add in Cabbage, salt and pepper and cook for another 5 minutes on medium heat. Before you add in your water you want your skillet of goodness to look like the picture below.

Finally, add in your water, cover and simmer on low for 25 minutes.

I like to serve this dinner over mashed potatoes and make some yummy cornbread to go along with it.  The night I took pictures as I made it my son just had to have corn for a side as well.  You can choose whatever veggie you want or none at all!

  1. Cut bacon into pieces and add to a large skillet on medium high heat. While bacon is cooking, cut up cabbage and sausage. When bacon is almost done, drain most of the grease and return skillet to burner.
  2. Add the sausage and garlic powder and cook on medium high heat for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. (Note, if you have regular bacon and want to sweeten it up a bit, add in a teaspoon of brown sugar during this step)
  3. Add in the cabbage, salt and pepper. Stir frequently, cooking on medium heat for another 5 minutes.
  4. Add the 2 tablespoons of water, cover with lid and simmer on low heat for 25 minutes. Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes

I like to serve this over mashed potatoes and with cornbread.  It's delicious!
