Three and a half years ago I fell in love with essential oils. My first child was born via c-section and while in the hospital I got a wound infection. It was one of the scariest moments for me especially since I had never even had an IV before. It took nearly three months on antibiotics to finally kill the bacteria (It was a MRSA Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection). I had never even heard of this before entering the hospital. I started googling and oh boy was that a bad idea. I had now convinced myself that I was going to die from sepsis. Add in your post partum hormones and you’ve got the perfect mix of crazy, lol! I joke, but it really was terrifying. The first essential oil I came across was tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia). I found this oil by researching things that kill MRSA. Tea tree oil has been known to be an excellent antibacterial and antimicrobial. I encourage you to read more about its ability to treat MRSA here. I also read that coconut oil had great antibacterial properties as well so I decided to make my own mixture of tea tree oil and coconut oil. Unfortunately I did not know about this in time to use on my infection but I did use this to prevent any further infections. I was told that once you had MRSA that you would always be a carrier….later I learned this was not the case for my infection, and that it was localized. I have tested negative for MRSA since. In fact, when I went to have my second baby this past December of 2016 I tested negative again. Anyway, before I found out that I was not a MRSA carrier, I would put this mixture of tea tree oil and coconut oil on any open wound. I like to think of tea tree oil as my “gateway” oil. It really opened my eyes up to the power of essential oils and how much safer they are (when used correctly) than your typical household cleaners, antibacterial creams, shampoos, conditioners, the list goes on and on.
I know that usually when we become a mom, we want only the best for our children. We try to protect them in every way that we can. For me, this meant trying to minimize the amount of chemicals used. It was actually a lot harder than I thought because even these “organic” cleaners and some other “all natural” products can have chemicals in them that are considered harmful. Don’t even get me started in trying to eat foods that do not have chemicals as that was incredibly difficult as well. It just takes a lot of prep work and when you have a brand new baby, sometimes you just don’t have the time. So I’ll admit, I did not have EVERYTHING all natural and chemical free as much as I want it all to be. I really give it up to those moms that can eat whole foods only and make all of their own products, it is very time consuming.
Essential oils not only changed my life by minimizing unnecessary chemicals, but they also helped my sanity, and being that my blog is called “The Mostly Sane Mommy” I definitely need to share how they helped keep me on the side of mostly sane and not mostly insane. There are so many benefits to many different oils. You don’t have to apply them directly to your skin or ingest (which I have not done yet, just trying to do my research first). You can diffuse the oils and still benefit from them. One of the most important oils in my day to day is Ylang Ylang. I actually have a roller bottle of this in my diaper bag as I get random anxiety attacks. I rub this oil on the insides of both of my wrists and breathe it in deeply when I start to feel the anxiety attack coming on. I will take many deep breaths in and out until the heart palpitations start to go away. I started using this when I was pregnant and it really worked guys, for real. It is not instant, but if you take a few minutes to focus on deep breaths of the oil in and slow exhale, it really helps to calm you. Ylang Ylang has many other great benefits as well.
I joined Young Living Essential Oils recently through my sister and they have a stress away blend that is also good for anxiety attacks. They also make it in a roller bottle. What I like about being a member of Young Living is that I can still get the discount without having people constantly signing up or purchasing through me. I am not a good salesperson and as much as I LOVE essential oils, I am just not a pushy person. Not that you have to be, but with Young Living you really don’t have to be. In the event you click on the stress away bottles and want to purchase, my distributor number is 10147434. I have really learned a lot from the Young Living Essential oils Facebook groups I belong to and it is really nice to have such a great support group when you have questions about mixing, applying, or what oil to use for what ailment. I have also used other oil brands. My mother-in law got me the Plant Guru kit pictured below for Christmas and I really like them as well, they are 100% pure essential oil. (I know the Young Living ladies are screaming at me right now, lol).
The point is, I want you to use essential oils no matter where you purchase them from (just make sure they are 100% pure). I promise you they will change your life. If an essential oil or multiple essential oils can save you from having to go to the doctor for a skin infection, it is worth it, right? I feel like it is. That is just one benefit to using essential oils. I honestly have a roller bottle for just about everything you can think of. I have a diffuser recipe for just about everything you can think of as well. I am working on getting all of those written and posted so I can share with you. Almost everyone that you meet that is an oil user will just be happy that you have crossed over to our side, lol. They aren’t going to hassle you on which brand you use (as long as it’s 100% pure and you know where it is sourced). Give it a shot, and if you have questions, please comment on my site or email me at Morgan@themostlysanemommy.com. If I do not know the answer, I will ask one of the incredibly knowledgeable people in my Facebook groups.
